KS2 arithmetic practice

Maths Paper 1 is 30 minutes, 40 marks, and no word problems at all. Because it tests fluency and nothing else, it is the paper where regular short practice pays off most visibly.

What actually comes up

The arithmetic paper draws from a predictable pool: addition and subtraction of large numbers; short and long multiplication; short and long division; fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, of amounts); decimals; percentages of amounts; order of operations with brackets; squares and cubes; and missing-number questions.

Because the pool is predictable, gaps are easy to find. A child who is fluent everywhere except long division has one thing to work on, not forty.

Why speed matters, and how to build it

36-ish questions in 30 minutes is under 50 seconds each. Children who know their methods but apply them slowly run out of time and lose marks on questions they could do.

Speed comes from short frequent sessions, not long ones. Ten minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday. The aim is for recall of times tables and standard methods to become automatic, so working memory is free for the actual calculation.

Practise with a timer, but do not make every session timed. A child who is still learning a method needs to be slow at it first.

A realistic weekly routine

Three sessions of 10-15 minutes is enough to move the needle across a term. Mix a short set of mixed questions with a focused set on whichever topic is weakest.

Keep a note of which topics questions were dropped on. After three weeks the pattern will be obvious, and that pattern is your revision plan.
