KS2 maths reasoning

Maths Papers 2 and 3 are 40 minutes and 35 marks each. The maths itself is no harder than the arithmetic paper — the difficulty is deciding what the question is asking for.

Why reasoning feels harder than it is

Children who are confident with calculation often lose marks here, and it is rarely because they cannot do the maths. It is because they misread the question, miss a step, or answer a slightly different question from the one asked.

The skill being tested is translation: turning a sentence about buses, cakes or money into a calculation. That is a separate skill from doing the calculation, and it needs separate practice.

Multi-step questions

Many reasoning questions need two or three operations. A common shape: work out one quantity, use it to work out another, then compare.

Encourage your child to write down what each step gives them, labelled. 'Cost of 3 = £4.50' is worth writing. It costs seconds and prevents the classic error of doing step one correctly then answering with step one's number.

Explain and prove questions

Some questions ask children to explain why something is true, or to show that a statement is wrong. These are usually 1 or 2 marks and are often left blank.

A useful habit: an explanation needs a number in it. 'Because it is not a multiple of 3' scores; 'because it doesn't work' does not.

Practising well

Do reasoning questions in small sets rather than whole papers at first. A whole 40-minute paper is a test of stamina as well as maths, and stamina is worth building later, closer to May.

When a mark is dropped, ask your child to explain what the question wanted rather than redoing the sum. Nine times in ten the problem was comprehension, and redoing the arithmetic teaches nothing.
